Year of Young People

The YOYP project aims to develop transferable skills in an engaging outdoor environment, something different from the traditional school.  Young people are encouraged to be active outdoors and learn about healthy eating to promote a better relationship with food and better mental health.

The students learnt a variety of skills including :

  • ground preparation and fertilisation for growing vegetables

  • sowing, plant care, pruning and harvesting

  • using garden machinery, featuring an informative visit to local business Tweedside Garden Machinery with owner Keith Taylor.

Quotes from some of our pupils...

  • "I really like working outside and with my hands."

  • "This is where I'd like to be in life; outside"

  • "This is good, I wouldn't change anything"

Next YOYP project, beginning in February 2019, will be to improve a space at the community garden to be more demential friendly and to allow service users of Victoria Park Day centre to sit in and enjoy the outdoors.  Pupils will get to know the service users so the space will meet their needs, be physically accessible and have enjoyable sensory features.
