Leaven Deli

The Leaven Deli was a social enterprise based in Peebles that worked with young people to build their confidence, get them ready for work or enterprise and better their life opportunities.

The Deli supported young people who may have had difficulty thriving through the traditional education system or with finding real life work experience, providing a bridge to future employment and career development.

Supporting around 26 young people in the past, the case studies below provide a more detailed overview of the impact of this project.

As well as this, they aimed to deliver the best local Scottish Borders produce as well as their own range of delicious deli products.  They offered homemade cakes, artisan bread, Award winning Pate, I.J Mellis Cheese, Stornoway Black pudding, freshly made scones, freshly roasted coffee, loose leaf tea, sandwiches, soups and specials at lunch time.

After a fun filled year of working with local young people, we have handed the deli on to Nashy, a local food entrepreneur who has taken on one of our last recruits in a full time position. We wish them all every success with their venture.

Case study 1

Louise has been working with us, keeping the 'front of house' in good order and making excellent coffees.

"I have learnt so much and like that I have been given many opportunities and responsibilities. I like that there is a company like the Leaven Deli wanting to give young people like myself opportunities to gain experience. Whether it is front of house, cooking, or doing the garden there is something for everyone."

Case study 2

Amy has worked in the Deli since November 2015. Starting off with cake baking, she's since built up her skill set, taking on new jobs in the kitchen such as preparing food and sandwiches, as well as serving coffees. Moving from two to four days weekly, developing teamwork skills have been especially important. Her favourite part is baking, and...

"It has helped me to gain experience, and I can work more with people"
